Jesus Eating with a Chief Priest - Luke 14:1

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which kill the prophets, and stone them that are sent unto you; how often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen does gather her brood under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, You shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord”, and in chapter fourteen and verse one of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day” where we read:

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

The verse reads, “And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day,” Luke began with the words, “And it came to pass” or “and it happened and came into existence”, “as he went into the house” which means “during the time and while made entrance into the dwelling place, abode and habitation” “of one of the chief Pharisees” or “belonging to a certain and particular ruling, commanding and leading Pharisee who belonged to a sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life” “to eat bread” which means “to consume and devour food composed of flour mixed with water and baked” “on the sabbath day” or “upon the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”. Luke shared how Jesus entered into the home of one of the “chief Pharisees” to “eat” on the “seventh day of rest”.

The verse goes on to say, “... that they watched him.” Luke continued with the words, “and they” or “and the Pharisee and those with him” “watched him” which means “observed, noticed, discerned and attended to Jesus with their eyes in a bad or insidious way”. Luke shared how the “Pharisee” and those within his home carefully “observed” Jesus in a pernicious way.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus went to a leading “Pharisee's” home on a “Sabbath day” to eat with Him. Jesus met with people to eat in their homes often, and though He desired to relate to all of them, the “Pharisees” usually “watched” Him closely just so they could bring some sort of accusation against Him. God knows the heart and mind of every person, and He will save them from their “sins” when they believe and trust in His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus and not just observe Him to find some flaw.

Next time Luke shares how, “there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
