Luke the beloved physician shared after Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples, they “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are you troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself” where we read:
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see;
for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have.
The verse reads, “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see;” Luke began with the word, “Behold” or “lo, look and consider”, “my hands and my feet” which means “my, Jesus' physical hands and physical feet”, “that it is I myself” or “that it is really I, Jesus, my own self”: “handle me” which means “touch and feel me, Jesus”, “and see” or “and perceive, understand, experience and know”. Luke shared how Jesus invited His disciples and the people with them to observe His “hands and feet” and “touch and feel Him” so they could know it was really Him.
The verse goes on to say, “for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have.” Luke continued with the words, “for a spirit” which means “because, since and on account that an essence which is devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting ” “has not flesh and bones” or “does not obtain a carnal soft substance of the living body which covers the bones and is permeated with blood and bones in the body”, “as you see me have” which means “like and in the manner in which you, disciples and people with them, observe, notice, discover and discern me, Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus reminded His disciples and the people with them that “a spirit” does not “have” “flesh and bones” like they saw Him.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus attempted to convince His disciples and the people with Him that He was not a “spirit”, so they did not have to be afraid. Jesus was with them in His glorified body, and although He was not “a spirit”, He was able to do things a person cannot do in their natural body. Jesus is risen from the dead, and He gave His life so people could obtain a “glorified body” after they die. Those who put their faith and trust in Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God and live forever in a glorified body provided by Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “showed them his hands and his feet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
