Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples who traveled with Him to Emmaus, and afterward they “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are you troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse forty of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “showed them his hands and his feet” where we read:
And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet.
The verse reads, “And when he had thus spoken, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “he had thus spoken” which means “Jesus said and told His disciples and the people with them to observe His hands and feet”. Luke shared after Jesus told His disciples to observe His “hands and feet”, He did the following.
The verse continues, “... he showed them his hands and his feet.” Luke added the words, “he showed them” which means “Jesus exhibited and brought into view toward His disciples and the people with Him” “his hands” or “His, Jesus', physical hands” “and his feet” which means “and His, Jesus' physical feet”. Luke shared how Jesus “exhibited” His “hands and feet” to His disciples and the people with them.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we can imagine how Jesus not only “showed” His disciples and the people with them His “hands and feet”, but also the marks where the nails were driven through them. Jesus still bore the scars where He was “nailed” to the cross, and when His disciples and the people with Him saw His hands and feet and the marks within them, we can imagine how they knew it was Him. Jesus wants people to believe and trust in Him as their personal “Lord and Savior”, and when they yield to Him He promises forgiveness of sins and everlasting life with His Father God in Heaven. Let all who read these words consider the “hands and feet” of our “Savior” Jesus.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus' disciples, “believed not for joy, and wondered”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
