Luke the beloved physician shared after Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples, they “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus asks His disciples, “Why are you troubled?” where we read:
And he said unto them, Why are you troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Why are you troubled?” Luke began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed to and asked His disciples and the people with them”, “Why are you troubled” which means “For what reason and cause are you, disciples and those with you, agitated, disturbed, disquieted, stirred up and made restless”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned His “eleven disciples” and the people with them for the “reason” they were so “afraid”.
The verse continues, “and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?” Luke added the words, “and why do thoughts arise” which means “and for what reason and cause does thinking, inward reasoning, purpose, design and deliberating occur” “in your hearts” or “within your, the eleven disciples and those with them, souls or minds as they are the fountain and seats of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the “reason” His disciples and those with them were “thinking” within their “souls” like they were.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus asked His disciples and the people with them for the “reason” they were “afraid” and “thinking” like they were. We can imagine after Jesus appeared out of “nowhere”, this would have made anyone “terrified”. However, Jesus was with them, and He confirmed His words about raising from the dead in the presence of those to whom He was speaking. Jesus was alive, and though His disciples and those with them thought things were hopeless, the Savior of the world stood before them. Those who examine the events surrounding Jesus' resurrection should submit their lives to Him, put all fear aside and have thoughts aligned with the “Lord and Savior” of the world.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
