Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus said to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-three of his book Luke shared how the two disciples, “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem” where we read:
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem,
and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
The verse reads, “And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they rose up the same hour” or “and the two disciples raise themselves up that selfsame hour”, “and returned to Jerusalem” which means “and went back to Jerusalem which means set you double peace and is the capital of Palestine”. Luke shared how the two disciples got up from their seated positions and went back immediately to Jerusalem.
The verse goes on to say, “... and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,” Luke continued with the words, “and found the eleven gathered together” which means “and came upon, saw, recognized and discovered the original eleven disciples of Jesus assembled with one another”, “and them that were with them” or “and the people who were alongside the eleven disciples”. Luke shared how the two disciples were seeking to “find” Jesus' original “eleven” disciples, and when they “found” them, there were others who were followers of Jesus with them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we notice how these “two disciples” could not wait till morning to get back to Jerusalem. They had already walked seven and a half miles to get to “Emmaus”, but they had no problem retracing their steps to hurriedly get back to the city of Jerusalem where all the events concerning Jesus' death, burial and resurrection occurred. Because their “hearts burned within them”, their passion arose, and nothing would impede them from getting to Jesus' original disciples. God loves to put this sort of passion in anyone who will yield their life to His Son Jesus, and when a person truly encounters Him, they cannot help but to make a decision whether to yield to Him or not.
Next time Luke shares how the disciples say, “the Lord is risen indeed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
