Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus said to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, ...”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-four of his book Luke shared how the disciples say, “the Lord is risen indeed” where we read:
Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.
The verse reads, “Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, ...” Luke began with the word, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “the Lord” which refers to “the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “is risen indeed” or “is aroused, awakened, erected and resurrected from the dead”. Luke shared how the two disciples told the “eleven” original disciples of Jesus that it is true that He is “resurrected” from the dead.
The verse continues, “... and has appeared to Simon.” Luke added the words, “and has appeared” which means “and has allowed Himself to be seen” “to Simon” or “by Simon which means shifting sand or Peter whose name means a little rock or stone”. Luke shared how the “two disciples” told the original “eleven disciples” that Jesus revealed Himself to “Simon Peter” as well.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn what the “two disciples” told the original “eleven disciples” of Jesus when they “found” them. They wanted the “eleven” to know that Jesus was “risen from the dead” and they somehow knew He “revealed” Himself to “Simon Peter”. Jesus was indeed alive, and He has risen from the dead to provide “salvation” to every person who yields their life to Him. God is willing to forgive every sin of mankind and grant them everlasting life when they submit themselves to Jesus, and those who are wise will submit to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how the two disciples, “told what things were done in the way”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
