In Psalms chapter ten David wrote, “the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, and blesses the covetous, whom the LORD abhors. The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. His ways are always grievous; your judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffs at them. He has said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity”, and in Psalms chapter ten and verse seven David said, “His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud” where we read,
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.
The verse begins, “His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: ” David began with the words, “His mouth” which means “the wicked person's orifice in the face used for eating and speaking” “is full of cursing” or “exists as complete, confirmed and filled with execration, oaths and swearing” “and deceit” which means “and treachery, guile, subtlety and falsehood” “and fraud” or “and injury, oppression and subjugation”. David shared how the wicked person speaks with swearing, treachery, falsehood and oppression.
The verse goes on to say, “under his tongue is mischief and vanity.” David continued with the words, “under his tongue” or “beneath the wicked person's physical tongue used for speaking” “is mischief” which means “exists toil, trouble and labor” “and vanity” or “and sorrow, idolatry and nothingness”. David wrote how the wicked person uses their “tongue” to speak troubles and nothingness.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David recognized that wicked people speak with swearing, guile, subtlety, falsehood, trouble and idolatry. In other words, their speech reveals their heart and soul. Jesus said, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”, (See Matthew 12:34) and God is well aware of the mind and intention of every person. Anyone who has not received His Son Jesus as their “Lord and Savior” often have no idea that they boastfully depend upon themselves and proclaim it to others. “Sin” literally means, “to miss the mark” and is derived from an archery term when people would place a hoop on top of a tree, draw back a bow with an arrow, and shoot the arrow. If they missed the target, it was considered to be a “sin”. Paul the apostle said, “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”. (See Romans 3:23) He also wrote, “there is none righteous, no, not one”, (See Romans 3:10) and the “wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. (See Romans 6:23). Jesus said, “be you therefore perfect, even as your father in heaven is perfect”, (See Matthew 5:48), and since no one is “perfect”, everyone is guilty of missing the mark. God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for every person, and in light of God's holiness, everyone is “wicked” and in need of Jesus. We may praise the LORD for His revelation of what the “wicked” are like, and let us turn to Him when we realize our speech reveals that we are among them.
Next time David says, “He sits in the lurking places of the villages”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
