In Psalms chapter ten David said, “the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, and … his mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. He sits in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places does he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor”, and in Psalms chapter ten and verse nine David said, “He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den” where we read,
He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor:
he does catch the poor, when he draws him into his net.
The verse begins, “He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor:” David began with the words, “He lies in wait secretly” which means “the wicked person lurks or waits within a location of hiding and concealment “as a lion in his den” or “like a young lion within his thicket, lair, covert or booth”: “he lies in wait” which means “the wicked person craftily lurks” “to catch the poor” or “to seize, clutch and take hold of the afflicted, humble, needy and weak”. David shared how the “wicked” hide and conceal themselves like young lions in their lairs, and their lurking is to capture and take advantage of people who are needy and weak.
The verse goes on to say, “he does catch the poor, when he draws him into his net.” David continued with the words, “he does catch the poor” or “the wicked person seizes, clutches and takes hold of the afflicted, humble, needy and weak”, “when he draws him” which means “at the time and moment the wicked person leads, attracts and drags the weak and needy person” “into his net” or “into the wicked person's snare or trap”. David wrote how the “wicked person” captures the weak and needy by leading them into their traps or snares.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn more about the ways of the “wicked” from David. They lure people who are afflicted, weak and needy into their traps while they wait in hiding to pounce on them like a “lion” does it's prey. We can imagine that David knew of the behavior of “lions” as he protected his father's sheep as a young lad, (See 1 Samuel 17:34-37), and he likened the sneaky behavior of the wicked person to that of a “lion”. We should remember that these words of David were inspired by the LORD God, and it reminds us that God is well aware of those who attempt to take advantage of others with their tempting words. God knows all sins that people commit, and sins keep mankind separated from a personal relationship with Him. He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for those sins, and anyone who humbles themselves before Him, repents of their sins and receives Him into their lives will be forgiven and inherit eternal life with Him. Let us be mindful that the True and Supreme God knows the ways of the wicked, and although it may appear for a time that they are getting away with their evil acts, He stands ready to either forgive and change them or judge them eternally for all their errors and wrong.
Next time David says, “He crouches, and humbles himself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
