A Man's Pride Shall Bring Him Low - Proverbs 29:23

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “An angry man stirs up strife, and a furious man abounds in transgression”, and in chapter twenty-nine and verse twenty-three of Proverbs Solomon said, “a man's pride shall bring him low” where we read,

A man's pride shall bring him low:

but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.

The verse begins, A man's pride shall bring him low: Solomon began with the words, “a man's pride” or “a person whether male or female's haughtiness, arrogance and swelling excellence” “shall bring him low” which means “will cause the person to become humiliated, abased and debased”. Solomon said the arrogance and haughtiness of a person will cause them to be humiliated.

The verse continues, “but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit. Solomon added the words, “but honor” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover glory, abundance, splendor and reputation” “shall uphold the humble” which means “will sustain, support and maintain people who are lowly and base” “in spirit” or “within their disposition, courage and vivacity”. Solomon said splendor and glory would sustain the disposition and nature of the person who is base and lowly.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we discover how arrogance and haughtiness cause a person to be humiliated, and splendor and reputation will sustain those who are lowly. God loves us, and He demonstrated His love and humility through His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for our sins. Paul the apostle wrote, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (See Philippians 2:5-8) When we surrender our lives to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to maintain a “humble spirit” so we may receive splendor and glory from Him.

Next time Solomon says, “whoso is partner with a thief hates his own soul”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
