A Servant Not Corrected By Words - Proverbs 29:19

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he”, and in chapter twenty-nine and verse nineteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “a servant will not be corrected by words”where we read,

A servant will not be corrected by words:

for though he understand he will not answer.

The verse begins, A servant will not be corrected by words: Solomon began with the words, “a servant” or “a slave, bondman or person of servile condition” “will not be corrected” which means “will in no way or manner be chastened, disciplined, instructed or admonished” “by words” or “through the means of speeches, utterances, declarations or proclamations”. Solomon said a person of servile condition shall in no way be disciplined or instructed through the means of speeches and declarations.

The verse continues, “for though he understand he will not answer. Solomon added the words, “for though he understand” or “because, since and on account that even if he, the servant, discerns, perceives, has insight and gives heed” “he will not answer” which means “he, the servant, shall in no way or manner respond or reply”. Solomon said even if a servant has insight to what is spoken to them they will in no way respond.

When we mediate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how people of servile condition will not be disciplined through the means of “words” alone because even if they comprehend what is said, they will not respond or take heed. The idea is that they are stubborn and unwilling to be admonished. God does not want this for us, and He desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we surrender to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us how to take heed to His correction and guidance and not to live as a stubborn and unwilling “servant”.

Next time Solomon asks, “see you a man that is hasty in his words?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
