Remove Vanity and Lies - Proverbs 30:8

In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “Two things have I required of you; deny me them not before I die”, and in chapter thirty and verse eight of Proverbs Agur said, “remove far from me vanity and lies” where we read,

Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches;

feed me with food convenient for me:

The verse begins, Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; Agur began with the words, “remove far from me” or “make and drive at a great distance separate and apart from me, Agur” “vanity and lies” which means “emptiness, falsehood, nothingness and worthlessness as well as untruths, deceptive things and deceitful words”: “give me neither poverty” or “do not grant, bestow, put or ascribe toward me, Agur, want, need, impoverishment or destitution” “nor riches” which means “no and not in any way wealth and nobility”. Agur said the “two things” he required from God before his death was to be separated from falsehood and deceptive things and not to be “poor” or “wealthy”.

The verse goes on to say, “feed me with food convenient for me: Agur continued with the words, “feed me with food” or “provide and supply to me, Agur, meat, grain and bread” “convenient for me” which means “a limit, prescribed amount or what is due to me, Agur”. Agur requested that he be supplied with a prescribed amount of “food” that would be sufficient for him.

When we think through Agur's words in this verse, we learn how he knew Jehovah God was responsible for his provision, and because he understood the power of God, he relied upon Him to keep him separated from falsehoods and deceptive things as well as to provide him with neither wealth nor impoverishment. Paul the apostle wrote, “but my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory” (See Philippians 4:19), and when we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide for us according to His perfect plan and purpose for our lives.

Next time Agur says, “lest I be full, and deny you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
