The Rod and Reproof Give Wisdom - Proverbs 29:15

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the king that faithfully judges the poor, his throne shall be established for ever”, and in chapter twenty-nine and verse fifteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “the rod and reproof give wisdom” where we read,

The rod and reproof give wisdom:

but a child left to himself brings his mother to shame.

The verse begins, The rod and reproof give wisdom: Solomon began with the words, “the rod” or “the staff, branch, stick or scepter” “and reproof” which means “and correction, punishment, chastisement and argument” “give wisdom” or “puts, sets, bestows, grants and ascribes skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Solomon said the scepter and correction provide skill and shrewdness to the person who receives them.

The verse continues, “but a child left to himself brings his mother to shame. Solomon added the words, “but a child” or “however, notwithstanding, nevertheless and moreover a boy, lad, infant, youth or adolescent” “left to himself” which means “let go, stretched out and directed by the youth's own self” “brings his mother to shame” or “makes disappointed, disconcerted and ashamed the child's immediate female progenitor and ancestor”. Solomon said a youth that is directed by their own selves makes their immediate female progenitor to be ashamed.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how discipline and correction are necessary for children, and although there is no room for abuse whether verbal or physical, if a child has no chastening at all, they become a menace to themselves and to others around them. God wants us to be His “disciples”, and this is made possible through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the proper way to be disciplined ourselves and to correct our children before they bring their mothers shame.

Next time Solomon shares what happens, “when the wicked are multiplied”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
