In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add you not unto his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar”, and in chapter thirty and verse seven of Proverbs Agur said, “two things have I required of you” where we read,
Two things have I required of you;
deny me them not before I die:
The verse begins, “Two things have I required of you;” The writer began with the words, “two things” or “two requests or petitions” “have I required of you” which means “have I, Agur, asked, inquired, begged and requested of you, the One True God”. Agur said that he had two petitions for the One True God.
The verse continues, “deny me them not before I die:” Agur added words, “deny me them not” or “do not withhold, keep back, refrain or hinder me, Agur, of the two things” “before I die” which means “ere, in advance and prior to my, Agur's, execution, killing, slaying or premature expiration ”. Agur plead for the two things to be given to him in advance of his physical expiration.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Agur how he was concerned about the “two things”being given to him in advance of his death. He wanted the One True God to fulfill these desires, and we shall discover what they were in our next verse. For now, let us think about Agur's request. He knew God alone could fulfill his major needs. He was aware that there was an expiration date on his life, and because He had a relationship with God, he could appeal to Him with his needs. God wants all of us to be in an intimate relationship with Him, and He provided His Son Jesus to the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind to facilitate His desire. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and carefully listen to us when we make requests of Him that are according to His purpose and will.
Next time Agur says, “remove far from me vanity and lies”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
