The Words of Agur - Proverbs 30:1

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked”, and in chapter thirty and verse one of Proverbs we see, “the words of Agur the son of Jakeh”where we read,

The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy:

the man spoke unto Ithiel, even to Ithiel and Ucal.

The verse begins, The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: The writer began with the words, “the words” or “the speeches, saying, utterances and communications” “of Agur” which means “belonging to Agur whose name means gathered and was the son of Jakeh” “the son of Jakeh” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Jakeh whose name means blame”, “even the prophecy” which means “also and indeed the bearing, tribute, burden and uplifting”. The writer shared how the following sayings and utterances came from “Agur” who was “Jakeh's” male offspring and contain the message in this chapter.

The verse goes on to say, “the man spoke unto Ithiel, even to Ithiel and Ucal. Solomon continued with the words, “the man” or “the mighty and strong warrior” “spoke unto Ithiel” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “even to Ithiel” or “also and indeed to Ithiel whose name means God is with me and was the disciple to whom Agur gave proverbs” “and Ucal” which means “and Ucal whose name means devoured and was a student and disciple of Agur”. The writer said the tributes were proclaimed to “Ithiel and Ucal” who were students and disciples of “Agur”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through the writer how the words in this chapter were given by“Agur” who was another writer of Proverbs. God is the ultimate writer of the scriptures, and He used various people to give His ordinances and wise sayings to people. (See 2 Peter 1:21) He loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us through His Holy Spirit to observe and keep the words and proverbs that are given in the Bible regardless of who the author who wrote them.

Next time Agur says, “surely I am more brutish than any man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
