In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him”, and in chapter thirty and verse six of Proverbs Agur said, “add you not unto his words” where we read,
Add you not unto his words, lest he reprove you,
and you be found a liar.
The verse begins, “Add you not unto his words, lest he reprove you, ...” Agur began with the words, “add you not unto his words” or “do not increase, augment or exceed his, the One True God's, speeches, declarations and proclamations”, “lest he reprove you” which means “beware, unless and peradventure he, the One True God, rebuke, correct, convict and chasten you, readers and listeners to Agur's words”. Agur instructed his readers and listeners not to augment the True God's declarations or they would be subject to correction and rebuke.
The verse goes on to say, “... and you be found a liar.” Agur continued with words, “and you be found” or “and you, readers and listeners to Agur's words, be discovered, perceived and known as” “a liar” which means “a deceiver, failure and vain”. Agur said the result of a person adding to the One True God's declarations would not only be correction by Him, but also they would be known as a deceiver.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Agur how we are not to add to the word of God. John in the book of Revelation said, “For I testify unto every man that hears the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” (See Revelation 22:18-19) God knows what is best for our lives, and because we have sinned, we come short of the glory of God. (See Romans 3:23) The “wages” for sin is death, (See Romans 6:23) and this is why God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross in our place. When we surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us not only to read and know His “word”, but also to discover full confidence in Him within it.
Next time Agur says, “two things have I required of you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
