More Brutish than Any Man - Proverbs 30:2

In the book of Proverbs the writer shared, “the words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spoke unto Ithiel, even to Ithiel and Ucal”, and in chapter thirty and verse two of Proverbs Agur said, “surely I am more brutish than any man” where we read,

Surely I am more brutish than any man,

and have not the understanding of a man.

The verse begins, Surely I am more brutish than any man, ... The writer began with the words, “surely I am more brutish” or “certainly and indeed I, Agur, exist as to a greater and more abundant degree foolish or stupid” “than any man” which means “compared to any other person whether male or female”. Agur declared himself to be foolish to a greater decree compared to any other person.

The verse goes on to say, “... and have not the understanding of a man.” Agur continued with the words, “and have not the understanding” or “and do not own, hold or possess the discernment and wisdom” “of a man” which means “belonging to a person whether male or female”. Agur said he did not possess the discernment and wisdom of other people.

When we think through Agur's words in this verse, we learn how He believed himself to be more foolish than other people, and that He did not possess wisdom from them. God was responsible for Agur even as He is for us. He desires to have a personal intimate relationship with every person who comes to Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to trust Him and not to rely upon our own wisdom nor the discernment that belongs only to other people

Next time Agur says, “I neither learned wisdom”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
