Cast the Net on the Right Side - John 21:6

John the apostle wrote how about Jesus' disciples, “Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with you. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said unto them, Children, have you any meat? They answered him, No”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse six of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples who were fishing, “cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find” where we read:

And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find.

They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

The verse begins, “And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find.” John began with the words, “and he said unto them” which means “and he, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples who were fishing”, “cast the net” or “throw and scatter the seine or net for catching fish” “on the right side of the ship” which means “on the starboard side of the sailing vessel or boat” “and you shall find” or “and you, disciples of Jesus, will hit upon, observe, learn, discover and recognize fish”. John shared how Jesus told His disciples who were fishing to throw their “net” upon the starboard side of their boat to discover the “meat” they desired to find.

The verse goes on to say, “They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.” John continued with the words, “they cast therefore” “Jesus' disciples who were fishing then, wherefore, consequently and on this account threw out their net”, “and now they were not able to draw it” which means “and at this time were unable, incapable and without strength, not strong enough and powerless to drag, lead or impel the net to themselves” “for the multitude of fishes” or “because of the great number and assemblage of fish inside the net”. John shared how the disciples of Jesus obeyed His instruction to cast their net upon the starboard side of their boat, and the result was a mighty haul of fish so massive that they were powerless to drag in their net.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus cared about the absence of fish for His disciples. Though they had toiled all night and caught nothing, their obedience to His word brought in a huge haul of fish. (See Luke 5:4-7 to see a previous time Jesus told His disciples to do this). Jesus is the Creator of the world, and He came to die on the cross for the sins of every person. He rose from the grave three days later, and this massive catch of fish was another demonstration of His power over nature. Jesus' Heavenly Father God desires a personal relationship with everyone who will yield their lives to Him, and He promises to forgive their sins and grant everlasting life to every person who believes. May all who read these words hear the words of the Lord Jesus and surrender their life to the One who created and knows the location of every fish in the world.

Next time John shares how he, “said unto Peter, it is the Lord”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
