Mary Magdalene Saw the Lord - John 20:18

John the apostle wrote after Jesus was dead, buried and resurrected how Mary Magdalene, Simon Peter and John went to His tomb and discovered His body was not there. The disciples went home, but, “Mary stood without at the sepulcher weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulcher, And saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they said unto her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus said unto her, Woman, why are you weeping? whom do you seek? She, supposing him to be the gardener, said unto him, Sir, if you have borne him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus said unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and said unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus said unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God”, and in chapter twenty and verse eighteen of his book John shared how, “Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord” where we read:

Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord,

and that he had spoken these things unto her.

The verse begins, “Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, ...” John began with the words, “Mary Magdalene” whose name means “their rebellion and was from Magdala” “came and told the disciples” or “arose, approached and brought tidings, reported and proclaimed to Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “that she had seen the Lord” which means “that she, Mary, observed, beheld and had vision of the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. John shared how “Mary” went to Jesus' “disciples” as He instructed her and “informed” them that she “saw” Him.

The verse goes on to say, “and that he had spoken these things unto her.” John continued with the words, “and he that had spoken” or “and that he, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed” “these things unto her” which means “the idea of Jesus ascending to His Heavenly Father God to her, Mary”. John shared how “Mary” continued to share with Jesus' disciples concerning His returning to His Heavenly Father.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Mary” obeyed the Lord Jesus and went to His “disciples” and told them what she saw. “Mary” saw Jesus, and she heard Him “speak” to her. Jesus wanted His “disciples” to know He was indeed risen from the grave and would be returning to His Father in Heaven soon. God desires for every person to know that His Son Jesus lives, and because He died for their sins and was resurrected from the grave, anyone who yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words “hear” the words of “Mary” and believe and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time John shares how Jesus, “came … and stood in their midst”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
