Simon Peter Goes Fishing - John 21:3

John the apostle wrote how, “Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise showed he himself. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse three of his book John shared how “Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing” where we read:

Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with you.

They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

The verse begins, “Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with you.” John began with the words, “Simon Peter said unto them” which means “Simon whose name means a little stone, Peter whose name means a little rock or stone uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus' other disciples who were with him”, “I go a fishing” or “I, Peter, am departing, withdrawing and getting away to fish”. “They say unto him” which means “Jesus' other disciples who were with Peter uttered, declared and proclaimed to him”, “we also go with you” or “we, disciples of Jesus, even so and indeed withdraw and depart to fish alongside of you, Peter”. John shared how “Simon Peter” told the other “disciples of Jesus” who were with him that he was “going fishing”, and they told “Peter” they would also “go” with him.

The verse continues, “They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.” John added the words, “they went forth” “Simon Peter and the other disciples left, departed and withdrew from where they were”, “and entered into a ship immediately” which means “and boarded a little boat or sailing vessel straightway and forthwith”; “and that night” or “and the night when Simon Peter and the other disciples went fishing” “they caught nothing” which means “Simon Peter and the other disciples did not catch, capture or seize any fish”. John shared how “Simon Peter” and the other disciples “immediately” entered a boat and went fishing all night long but did not catch any fish.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how “Simon Peter” decided to “go fishing” with the other disciples. They boarded a boat and fished all night long, however, they did not catch a single fish. This was many of their professions before they met Jesus, and they knew how to catch fish, but this time, they were unsuccessful. Many people distract themselves with their occupations, professions, hobbies or other activities when they sense a delay or absence of Jesus in their lives. “Simon Peter” and the other disciples will learn how Jesus was near in our next verse, but for now we learn how the “disciples” were without activity in their lives and resorted to what they knew in the past. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, He will forgive them for their sins, grant them everlasting life and be with them at all times even when they do not know He is near.

Next time John shares, “when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
