Piercing Jesus' Side - John 19:34

The apostle John shared how after Jesus died on the cross, “the Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs:”, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirty-four of his book John shared how, “one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side” where we read:

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

The verse reads, “But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, ...” John began with the words, “But one of the soldiers” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a particular or certain one of the Roman military officers or warriors” “with a spear” or “using the iron point or head of a shaft” “pierced his side” which means “transfixed, pricked, nudged or pierced through his, Jesus', side of His body”. John shared how a certain one of the Roman military officers stuck his “spear” into the side of Jesus' body.

The verse goes on to say, “... and forthwith came there out blood and water.” John continued with the words, “and forthwith” or “and immediately and straightway” “came there out blood” which means “there arose and appeared blood” “and water” or “and water from the side of Jesus”. John shared how immediately after the Roman soldier struck Jesus' side, “blood and water” flowed from the wound.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how one of the Roman soldiers who noticed that Jesus was already dead, “pierced his side” to insure that Jesus was truly dead. When he put the spear in Jesus' side, “blood and water” flowed from the wound which indicates that Jesus died from a broken heart. The spear was shoved into His side, likely under His ribs, that ruptured the pericardial sack, resulting in a flow of both blood and water. Jesus' blood was shed for the sins of all mankind, and the water flowed to cleanse all who will submit themselves to Him. God loves people, and the heart of His Son Jesus demonstrated His immense desire to have a personal relationship with everyone. Let all who consider these words surrender to Jesus whose “heart of love” was literally poured out for them.

Next time John shares, “he that saw it bare record, and his record is true”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
