The True Record - John 19:35

John the apostle shared how after Jesus died on the cross, “the Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water”, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirty-five of his book John wrote, “he that saw it bare record, and his record is true” where we read:

And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true:

and he knows that he said true, that you might believe.

The verse reads,And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true:” John began with the words, “and he that saw it bare record” which means “and he, John the apostle, who observed, noticed and perceived the crucifixion of Jesus testified, affirmed and gave a good report”, “and his record is true” or “and his, John the apostle's, testimony, affirmation and good report exists as truthful, veracious and sincere”. John shared how he himself observed the crucifixion of Jesus, and he testified to what he saw because what he perceived was truthful and veracious.

The verse continues, “and he knows that he said true, that you might believe.” John added the words, “and he knows” or “and he, John the apostle, perceived, noticed, discerned and discovered” “that he said true” which means “what he, John, uttered, declared and proclaimed is truthful, veracious and sincere”, “that you might believe” or “so you, readers of John's account, may trust in, rely upon, cling to and have confidence in Jesus and what He did”. John shared how he himself “knew” he was telling the “truth”, and his purpose for sharing these things was so his readers would have faith and trust in Jesus.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how John desired for his readers to “know” he was telling them the “truth”, and his purpose for doing was so they would “believe” in Jesus. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they read the account of John concerning Jesus, God wants them to surrender their life to Him so they will be forgiven of their sins and live eternally with Him. Everything John wrote is “true”, and his reason for testifying was so every person who reads may “believe”.

Next time John shares how, “these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
