Simon Peter Following John - John 20:6

John the apostle wrote, “the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and saw the stone taken away from the sepulcher. Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him. Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher. So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulcher. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in”, and in chapter twenty and verse six of his book John shared how “then came Simon Peter following him” where we read:

Then came Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulcher, and saw the linen clothes lie,

The verse begins, “Then came Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulcher, ...” John began with the words, “Then came Simon Peter” which means “at that time arose and appeared Jesus' disciple Simon whose name means a little rock, Peter which means a little rock or stone” “following him” or “coming after and behind him, John”, “and went into the sepulcher” which means “and entered the cenotaph, grave or tomb” where Jesus was buried. John shared how “Simon Peter” appeared at the “sepulcher” where Jesus was buried shortly after John, and he entered the “tomb”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and saw the linen clothes lie,” John continued with the words, “and saw the linen clothes” or “and observed the linen strips used for swathing Jesus' dead body” “lie” which means “set and appointed in an appointed place”. John shared how “Simon Peter” observed the “linen strips” used to swath Jesus' body “lying” by themselves in a particular place.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Simon Peter” did not refrain from entering the tomb, and when he went inside, he too observed the “linen strips” with which “Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus” used to wrap Jesus' dead body. We can imagine the puzzled face “Peter” had as he attempted to discern what happened to Jesus' body. God's plan of salvation was unfolding, and when He raised Jesus from the dead, He made a way for every person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus to be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. Let all who read these words carefully consider the resurrection of Jesus and submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” .

Next time John shares how Peter saw, “the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
