Peter and John Come to the Sepulcher - John 20:3

John the apostle wrote how, “the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and saw the stone taken away from the sepulcher. Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him”, and in chapter twenty and verse three of his book John shared how, “Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher” where we read:

Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher.

The verse begins, “Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, ...” John began with the words, “Peter therefore went forth” which means “Peter whose name means a little rock or stone then, wherefore, consequently and on this account left and departed”, “and that other disciple” or “along with the other student, pupil and attendant of Jesus who was John” and did the following. John shared how “Peter and John” left where they were to follow up on what “Mary Magdalene” told them.

The verse continues, “... and came to the sepulcher.” John added the words, “and came” or “and arose and appeared” “to the sepulcher” which means “toward the cenotaph, grave or tomb”. John shared how “Peter and John” appeared at the tomb where Jesus was buried.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Peter and John” responded to “Mary Magdalene's” information by going to the tomb where Jesus was buried. They too were unaware at this time that Jesus was risen from the dead. They wanted to verify what “Mary Magdalene” told them, and like her, they were in wonder about the location of Jesus' body. We shall see how Jesus reveals Himself to His disciples in the next few verses, but for now let it suffice us to know that Jesus defeated “death, hell and the grave” so people could have a personal relationship with Him. When they put their faith and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words “run” in their hearts and minds to Jesus' empty tomb and surrender their lives to Him today.

Next time John shares how he, “did outrun Peter”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
