What Shall This Man Do? - John 21:21

John the apostle wrote how Jesus told Peter, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, When you were young, you girded yourself, and walked wherever you would: but when you shall be old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another shall gird you, and carry you where you would not. This spoke he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he said unto him, Follow me. Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrays you?”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twenty-one of his book John shared how Peter asked Jesus, “what shall this man do?” where we read:

Peter seeing him said to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

The verse begins, “Peter seeing him said to Jesus, ...” John began with the words, “Peter seeing him” which means “Peter whose name means a little rock or stone observing, beholding, noticing and discerning him, John” “said to Jesus” or “uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” the following question. John shared how “Peter” noticed John and asked Jesus the following question about him.

The verse continues, “... Lord, and what shall this man do?” John added the word, “Lord” or “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”, “what shall this man do” which means “what will this male human being make ready, perform or produce”? John shared how “Peter” asked Jesus what was to become of John's life.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Peter” became concerned with what “John” would “make ready or produce”, and he asked Jesus about it. Rather than simply “following Jesus” like Jesus instructed him, “Peter” was interested in what would happen to his fellow “disciple”. Jesus will respond to “Peter” in our next verse, but this example should serve to inspire everyone to keep their eyes upon themselves and “mind their own business” with the Lord Jesus. God desires a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they submit to Him, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and give them a personalized plan and purpose for their life in His Kingdom. Let all who read these words keep their eyes upon Jesus and “follow” Him in the purpose and plan for their lives.

Next time John shares how Jesus tells Peter, “if I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to you?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
