Have You Any Meat? - John 21:5

John the apostle wrote how, “Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with you. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse five of his book John shared how Jesus asked His disciples who were fishing, “have you any meat?” where we read:

Then Jesus said unto them, Children, have you any meat? They answered him, No.

The verse begins, “Then Jesus said unto them, Children, have you any meat?” John began with the words, “then Jesus said unto them” which means “therefore, wherefore, on this account and at that time the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared, proclaimed to and asked His disciples that were fishing”, “Children” or “little or young ones”, “have you any meat” which means “do you have any fish”? John shared how Jesus affectionately called His disciples “little ones” as He questioned whether they had any fish or “meat”.

The verse continues, “They answered him, No.” John added the words, “they answered him” “Jesus' disciples responded by saying”, “no” which means “nothing at all”. John shared how Jesus' disciples responded to His question by saying they had no “fish” at all.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus called out to His disciples by asking them if they had any fish. They gave the answer that rarely any true fisherman likes to give, none at all. We can imagine the disciples' thoughts as they made effort after effort through the night to catch something, and yet, they had nothing in their nets when they drew them into the boat. Jesus' question will be one of significance in our next verse, but for now, let us examine our own efforts and works that are performed without the touch of the Lord. God's desire is to bless every person through a personal relationship with His Son Jesus, and when a person yields to Him, they will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life with God and empowered by His Holy Spirit to produce works in His Kingdom. Let all who read these words hear the question of Jesus, “Children, have you any meat?”

Next time John shares how Jesus tells His disciples who were fishing, “cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
