Mary Sees Jesus - John 20:14

John the apostle wrote after Jesus was dead, buried and resurrected how “Simon Peter and John” went to the graveside where He was buried and noticed His body was gone. Afterward, “the disciples went away again unto their own home. But Mary stood without at the sepulcher weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulcher,And saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they said unto her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him”, and in chapter twenty and verse fourteen of his book John shared how Mary, “turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing” where we read:

And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing,

and knew not that it was Jesus.

The verse begins, “And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, ...” John began with the words, “and when she had thus said” which means “and at the time and moment she, Mary, uttered, declared and proclaimed her words about Jesus being taken and not knowing where they laid Him”, “she turned herself back” or “she, Mary, twisted herself about”, “and saw Jesus standing” which means “and observed, beheld and noticed the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation fixed, established and standing upright”. John shared how “Mary” finished her statement to the “two angels”, turned around and noticed Jesus “standing” behind her.

The verse goes on to say, “... and knew not that it was Jesus.” John continued with the words, “and knew not” or “and did not understood, perceive or notice” “that it was Jesus” which means “that the one standing behind Mary was the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”. John shared that although “Mary” observed Jesus “standing” behind her, she was actually unaware that it was Him.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how “Mary” turned around as to leave the “tomb” where she saw the “two angels” and noticed “Jesus” “standing” behind her. At this point, she was unaware who He was. Perhaps her grief was so great and her understanding of the resurrection of Jesus was unknown, she did not even notice it was actually Him. God knows people have a need for a “Savior and Lord”, and without Him they would be lost in their sins and live forever apart from Him. He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross and be raised from the grave to provide forgiveness of sins and eternal life with Him in Heaven. Those who surrender their lives to Jesus will be “saved” from eternal “death” to come, and even as Jesus was “standing” before “Mary”, those who believe will stand before Him with their loved ones who also believed in Him in Heaven.

Next time John shares how Jesus asks Mary, “why are you weeping?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
