I Thirst - John 19:28

The apostle John wrote how, “there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said unto his mother, Woman, behold your son! Then said he to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-eight of his book John wrote how Jesus said, “I thirst” where we read:

After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst.

The verse reads, “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said ...” John began with the words, “After this” which means “beyond Jesus providing for His mother”, “Jesus knowing that all things” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation understood, perceived, noticed and discerned that each, every, the whole and everything that needed to be done” “were now accomplished” which means “were at this point in time finished, completed and performed “said” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words. John shared how “Jesus” knew everything that was to be fulfilled concerning His death, so He proclaimed the following words.

The verse goes on to say, “... I thirst.” John continued with the words, “I thirst” or “I, Jesus, and suffering from, painfully feel in want of and desire to be refreshed, supported and strengthened with liquid”. (See Psalm 22:15) John shared how Jesus declared that He was “thirsty” after having been on the cross for several hours.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was fully aware of all the details concerning His death, and because He knew it was necessary to complete them all, He knew when they were completed. At that time He expressed His humanity as His physical body was “thirsty” and told those watching Him. We shall see how they respond in our next verse, but for now let us be mindful of the fact that Jesus endured all these things so people might be saved from their sins and inherit everlasting life with His Father God in Heaven. Jesus was “thirsty”, and those who become “thirsty” spiritually will see their “thirst” quenched when they surrender themselves to Jesus Christ.

Next time John shares how a Roman officer, “filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
