It is Finished - John 19:30

The apostle John wrote, “Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth”, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirty of his book John wrote how Jesus said, “It is finished” where we read:

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished:

and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

The verse reads, “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished:” John began with the words, “When Jesus” which means “at the time and moment the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “therefore had received the vinegar” or “then, wherefore and consequently took hold of and procured the mixture of sour wine or vinegar and water which the Roman soldiers were accustomed to drink” “he said” which means “he, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “it is finished” or “the completion of all things necessary and exists as completed, performed, executed and fulfilled”. John shared after Jesus tasted of the “vinegar”, He uttered the words, “it is performed, executed and completed”.

The verse goes on to say, “and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” John continued with the words, “and he bowed his head” or “and he, Jesus, reclined his physical head”, “and gave up the ghost” which means “and delivered, committed and commended His spirit”. John shared how Jesus lowered His physical head and set His spirit free.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus proclaimed everything completed for the salvation of mankind, so He bent His head downward and set His spirit free. No one took Jesus' life from Him, He gave it. Jesus fulfilled every detail prophesied concerning His death, and when it was completed, He bowed His head and died. God's plan of salvation was finally complete, and the price for the sins of every person throughout the world was paid. Now everyone has an opportunity to have a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus. God loves the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, and whoever believes and trusts in Him will not “perish”, but have everlasting life with God. (See John 3:16) Let all who read these words understand that Jesus died for them, and when they surrender their lives to Him, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life with His Father God in Heaven.

Next time John shares how the Jews beckon, “Pilate that their legs might be broken”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
