Mary, Why are You Weeping? - John 20:13

John the apostle wrote after Jesus was dead, buried and resurrected how “Simon Peter and John” went to His grave, and afterward, “the disciples went away again unto their own home. But Mary stood without at the sepulcher weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulcher, And saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirteen of his book John shared how the angels asked Mary, “Woman, why are you weeping?” where we read:

And they said unto her, Woman, why are you weeping?

She said unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

The verse begins, “And they said unto her, Woman, why are you weeping?” John began with the words, “and they said unto her” which means “and they, the two angels, uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked her, Mary”, “Woman” or “female human being”, “why are you weeping” which means “for what reason and cause are you, Mary, bewailing, lamenting and mourning”? John shared how the “two angels” asked “Mary” for what reason was she “lamenting and crying”.

The verse continues, “She said unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.” John added the words, “she said unto them” or “she, Mary, uttered, declared and proclaimed to the two angels”, “because they have taken away” which means “since and on account that they, whoever that might be, have removed and separated from this place” “my Lord” or “my, Mary's, One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”, “and I know not where they have laid him” which means “and I, Mary, do not understand, perceive, notice or discern to what place or location they, whoever took Jesus' body away, have placed, set and put him, Jesus”. John shared how “Mary” answered the “two angels” question by telling them she was “lamenting” because someone “took away” her “Lord” and she had no idea where they put His body.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the “two angels” wondered what the reason was for her “lamenting”, and her answer was that someone removed Jesus' body and she did not know where they took him. “Mary”, although she was answering “spiritual beings”, was only thinking in the natural, and a supernatural event had taken place. Jesus was risen from the dead, and He would soon reveal Himself to her. Those who have lost “loved ones” know the pain and sorrow experienced by “Mary”, and their idea may be that they do not know where their loved ones are located. God Himself knew people would eventually die because death is the “wages” of sin (See Romans 6:23), and for this reason He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of the world so everyone who believes in Him may forever live with God. Jesus is alive, and anyone who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will live forever with Him even after their physical bodies have died.

Next time John shares how Mary, “turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
