Mark wrote how, “the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine. And when even was come, he went out of the city. And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-one of his book, Mark shared how Peter said “Master, behold, the fig tree … is withered away” where we read:
And Peter calling to remembrance said unto him,
Master, behold, the fig tree which you cursed is withered away.
The verse reads, “And Peter calling to remembrance said unto him, ...” Mark began with the words, “and Peter” which refers to “one of Jesus' disciples whose name means a little stone or rock” “calling to remembrance” or “was reminded, called to mind and recollected” “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”. Mark shared how Peter remembered what Jesus said to the “fig tree” and proclaimed the following to Him.
The verse continues, “... Master, behold, the fig tree which you cursed is withered away.” Mark added the word, “Master” which means “Rabbi, my great on and my honorable sir”, “behold” or “look, see and consider”, “the fig tree” which means “the tree which bears fig fruit” “which you cursed” or “that Jesus doomed” “is withered away” which means “has been made dry, wasted and pined away”. Mark shared how Peter told Jesus to see how the “fig tree” which He “doomed” was “dried up and wasted”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Peter noticed the “fig tree” that Jesus “cursed” the day before was “dried up”. Jesus demonstrated His power over “fruitless” nature, and since He was the Creator of all trees, He was able to do as He desired with them. “Fruit” was the purpose for this tree existing, and when it bore no “fruit”, it did not fulfill it's purpose. God's desire is for every person to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they are to naturally produce “spiritual fruit” for Jesus to consume. Jesus said, “You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” (John 15:16)
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “Have faith in God” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
