The Fig Tree Dried Up - Mark 11:20

Mark wrote how, “the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine. And when even was come, he went out of the city”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty of his book, Mark shared how Jesus and His disciples, “saw the fig tree dried up from the roots” where we read:

And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

The verse reads, “And in the morning, as they passed by, ...” Mark began with the words, “and in the morning” which means “and early in the fourth watch of the night from approximately three o'clock until six o'clock in the morning”, “as they passed by” or “when Jesus and His disciples proceeded at the side”. Mark shared how Jesus and His disciples rose again and were on the move again.

The verse goes on to say, “... they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. Mark continued with the words, “they saw” which means “Jesus and His disciples perceived, notice, discovered and discerned” “the fig tree” or “he tree that should have bore fig fruit” “dried up” which means “withered and became dry” “from the roots” or “from the root springs”. Mark shared how Jesus and His disciples “noticed” that the “fig tree” was completely “withered” from the “roots” up.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus and His disciples passed directly by the “fig tree” that Jesus cursed the day before. This time, the tree was “withered” entirely through, and there was no way for it to be alive again. Jesus has power over nature (He created it), and because He was looking for “fruit” to consume upon the tree without any there, there was no use for the tree any longer. Lest those reading these words be as the useless “fig tree” without producing any “spiritual fruit”, let everyone believe and trust in Jesus as their “Savior and Lord” and allow Him to bring about “fruit” in their lives. (See Luke 8:14-15)

Next time Mark shares how Peter says, “Master, behold, the fig tree which you cursed is withered away” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
