A Man Named Jairus - Luke 8:41

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him”, and in chapter eight and verse forty of his book Luke shared how, “there came a man named Jairus” to Jesus where we read:

And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue:

and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:

The verse reads, “And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: Luke began with the words, “and, behold” or “and lo, look and consider”, “there came a man named Jairus” which means “there arose and appeared a male human being called and surnamed Jairus which means whom God enlightens and was a ruler of a synagogue, probably near the western shore of the Sea of Galilee”, “and he was a ruler” or “and Jairus was a commander, chief and leader” “of the synagogue” which means “belonging to the sacred worship place where an assembly of Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures”. Luke shared how a “man” “named Jairus” who was a “chief and leader” in the “sacred worship” place approached Jesus.

The verse goes on to say, “and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:” Luke continued with the words “and he fell down” which means “and Jairus prostrated himself” “at Jesus' feet” or “beneath Jesus' physical feet”, “and besought him” which means “and begged, pled and desired Jesus” “that he would come into his house” or “that Jesus would arise, appear and make entrance within his dwelling place, abode and habitation”. Luke shared how Jairus prostrated himself at “Jesus' feet” as he asked Him to come to his home.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about “Jairus” who was a “leader and chief” in the sacred worship place known as the “synagogue”. This becomes very interesting because most of the leaders in the “synagogue”wanted nothing to do with Jesus other than to criticize Him and attempt to find some area of fault with Him. And yet, here was “Jairus” who was not only “falling” at the feet of Jesus, but also “begging” Him to come to his home. We shall learn that “Jairus” had a daughter who was very ill and about to die, and regardless of a person's personal feelings and knowledge about God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son, when they are desperate enough, they will call upon Him. God desires people to seek His help through His Son Jesus well in advance of the times when troubles arise, and when they yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they receive the promise that He will be with them in everything they encounter.

Next time Luke shares how Jairus, “had only one daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
