Jairus' Twelve Year Old Daughter - Luke 8:42

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house”, and in chapter eight and verse forty-two of his book Luke shared, “had only one daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying” where we read:

For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying.

But as he went the people thronged him.

The verse reads, “For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. Luke began with the words, “for he had one only daughter” or “because, since and on account that Jairus possessed one single female offspring or progeny”, “about twelve years of age” which means “who was around twelve years old”, “and she lay a dying” or “and Jairus' daughter was at the point of death”. Luke shared how Jairus' “daughter” was only “twelve years old” and was about to die.

The verse continues, “But as he went the people thronged him.” Luke added the words “but as he went” which means “however, nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover while Jesus made His way to Jairus' house” “the people thronged him” or “the crowd of people pressed round about Jesus as almost to suffocate him”. Luke shared how people crowded all around Jesus as He walked toward Jairus' house.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn the reason why Jairus wanted Jesus to come to his home. Jairus' “daughter” who was only “twelve years old” was “dying”, and Jairus wanted Jesus' help. Desperate people will call upon God to help when they have greater difficulties than they can handle, and Jairus' knew his daughter would die if he didn't get Jesus to come. God is willing for every person to come to Him through His Son Jesus Christ, and when they yield their life to Him, not only will they receive forgiveness for their sins, but they will also be granted “everlasting life” with God.

Next time Luke shares how there was, “a woman having an issue of blood twelve years”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
