A Woman with an Issue of Blood - Luke 8:43

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house. For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him”, and in chapter eight and verse forty-three of his book Luke shared how there was, “a woman having an issue of blood twelve years” where we read:

And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,

The verse reads, “And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, ... Luke began with the words, “and a woman” or “and a female human being” “having an issue of blood twelve years” which means “being with a flowing issue of blood shed for twelve years”, “which had spent all her living” or “who had expended each, every, the whole and everything by which her life was sustained” “upon physicians” which means “on medical doctors”. Luke shared how the woman had a “flow of blood” that was with her for “twelve years”, and to make matters worse, she spent everything she owned upon medical doctors.

The verse goes on to say, “... neither could be healed of any, ...” Luke continued with the words “neither could be healed” which means “no and not in any way was she able to be cured, made well and restored to health” “of any” or “by none fo the physicians”. Luke shared how none of the “doctors” were able to “help or cure” the woman.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn about a “woman” who had a “bleeding issue”, and she followed Jesus as He was going to Jairus' house. The woman spent everything she had on “physicians”, but none of them could cure her. She was desperate, and she believed Jesus could heal her. Jairus was desperate and this woman was desperate, and they both needed Jesus. Those who truly examine their lives and find themselves in need of Jesus may submit to Him to help them with their despairing needs.

Next time Luke shares how the woman, “came behind” Jesus “and touched the border of his garment”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
