Touching the Border of Jesus' Garment - Luke 8:44

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house. For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him. And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, ...”, and in chapter eight and verse forty-four of his book Luke shared how the woman, “came behind” Jesus “and touched the border of his garment” where we read:

Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment:

and immediately her issue of blood stanched.

The verse reads, “Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: Luke began with the words, “came behind him” or “drew near to and approached the backside of Jesus”, “and touched the border” which means “and fastened herself and clung to the fringe, appendage or extremity and prominent part” “of his garment” or “belonging to Jesus' raiment, cloak, mantle or tunic”. Luke shared how the woman with the “issue of blood” followed behind Jesus and reached out to fasten herself to the “hem” of His clothes.

The verse continues, “and immediately her issue of blood stanched.” Luke added the words “and immediately” which means “and straightway and forthwith” “her issue of blood stanched” or “the woman's flowing and flux of blood shed stopped and became immovable”. Luke shared how the woman's “flowing blood” stopped “immediately” after she touch the hem of Jesus' clothes.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the woman with the “issue of blood” pressed through the crowd of people surrounding Jesus, followed behind Him and reached out to “touch” His “garment”. Although she reached only the “hem” of His clothes, “straightway” afterward she was healed. The power of God is available to everyone who will reach out and touch Him, and when they understand His purposes are “eternal”, they align with His purpose to “heal” them from whatever difficulty they are encountering. God loves people, and He wants a relationship with them through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will “reach out” and “touch” Jesus by believing and trusting in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “who touched me?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
