Jesus Asleep in the Storm - Luke 8:23

Luke the beloved physician wrote concerning Jesus, “Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “as they sailed ... fell asleep” where we read:

But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake;

and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.

The verse reads, “But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake;” Luke began with the words, “but as they sailed” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and while Jesus and His disciples navigated and traveled by ship” “he fell asleep” which means “Jesus dropped off in slumber or sleep”: “and there came down as storm of wind” or “and there descended and fell a tempestuous wind or whirlwind like a squall” “on the lake” which means “upon the body of water in which Jesus and the disciples sailed”. Luke shared how Jesus “slept” while a “tempestuous wind” descended upon the lake in which they were sailing.

The verse goes on to say, “and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.” Luke added the words “and they were filled with water” which means “and the boat in which they sailed began to be completely and entirely swamped and with water”, “and were in jeopardy” or “and Jesus' disciples were in danger and peril”. Luke shared how the “tempestuous wind” caused “water” to fill the boat in which Jesus and His disciples sailed which caused them to be in “danger and peril”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn of a very dangerous venture Jesus and His disciples were experiencing upon the lake. Though they were in “great danger”, Jesus was “asleep”. Jesus created the lake, wind, disciples and the material for the boat, and there was no need for Him to be “troubled” at all. However, the disciples were only experiencing what they were sensing, and they believed themselves to be in “peril”. God oversees every situation that arises in our lives, and because He desires to be involved personally with every person through His Son Jesus, He is always aware of the “storms” that suddenly appear. Let all who read these words carefully note the posture of Jesus in this situation as well as the disciples, and may the lessons from the “Prince of Peace” Jesus be an inspiration to us the next time we face troubles that suddenly arise.

Next time Luke shares how, “they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
