Maid, Arise - Luke 8:54

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus healed a woman with an issue of blood while He was journeying to Jairus' house to attend to his daughter, and while He spoke to the woman, “there came one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Your daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleeps. And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead”, and in chapter eight and verse fifty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus told Jairus' daughter, “Maid, arise” at Jesus where we read:

And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.

The verse reads, “And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, ... Luke began with the words, “and he put them all out” or “and Jesus sent, drove and cast each, every, the whole and everyone who was mourning over the death of Jairus' daughter”, “and took her” which means “and held, possessed and seized Jairus' daughter” “by the hand” or “by her physical hand”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed everyone to leave He and Jairus' daughter, and when they were gone, Jesus took Jairus' daughter by her “hand”.

The verse continues, “... and called, saying, Maid, arise.” Luke added the words, “and called” which means “and emitted a sound, tone and voice”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Maid, arise” which means “little girl, arouse from sleep, awake and be stirred up”. Luke shared how Jesus spoke and told the little girl to “awake” and be “stirred up”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus removed everyone from the room where Jairus' daughter lie. He then spoke to her and recalled life into her as He told her to “arise”. Jesus demonstrated His power over “death”, and we can only imagine the result of this before her parents and those who were previously mourning within her home. God is in the amazing business, and since He Created life, He can bring to life that which was dead. This was a prelude to Him being raised from “death” Himself, and it shows those who will examine the evidence of His power over death how they should “believe and trust” in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” so they too may be “raised from death to life” even as Jairus' daughter illustrated.

Next time Luke shares how the little girl's, “spirit came again, and she arose straightway”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
