Woe unto You Lawyers - Luke 11:46

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying you reproach us also”, and in chapter eleven and verse forty-six of his book Luke shared, “then answered one of the lawyers” where we read:

And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you lade men with burdens grievous to be borne,

and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

The verse reads, “And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “woe unto you also” which means “nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover alas as a word of warning to the lawyers even so and indeed”, “you lawyers” or “you, certain and particular men who was an expert and learned in the Mosaic law”! “for you lade men” which means “because, since and on account that you lawyers encumber people whether male or female with ceremonial heavy loads” “with burdens” or “with heavy obligations, oppressions and observances” “grievous to be borne” which means “hard and difficult to be carried, managed and performed”. Luke shared how Jesus indited the “lawyers” for putting great religious “burdens” upon people which were very difficult to follow and carry.

The verse goes on to say, “... and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.” Luke continued with the word, “and you yourselves” or “and you lawyers” “touch not the burdens” which means “do not even help or impinge those heavy obligations, oppressions and observances ” “with one of your fingers” or “with one digit of the lawyer's physical fingers”. Luke shared how Jesus told the “lawyers” they were proficient at binding burdens upon people, but would not so much as lift a “finger” to help them carry them.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus told the “lawyers” among the people how they were constantly telling people how to live, act and move in the world. They gave “religious rules” and the “judgments” for not following those rules all the time, and yet, they never helped anyone “keep” the “rules” they put upon them. The idea was, if you lay burdens upon people, be equally anxious to remove those burdens as you were to put them on those people. These “lawyers” were proficient at “telling others what to do”, but they had no mind to give them aid. God has “laws”, for example His ten commandments, and those “laws” are meant not only to keep order among people, but also to let them know they have a nature within that is in opposition to those “laws”. This is why He sent Jesus. God sent His Son Jesus to help people with their “nature” that is against Him, and when they believe and trust in Jesus, He begins to change their ways to be conformed to His image. Those who are wise will examine themselves and be certain they are not simply “rule issuers or followers” and believe and trust in Jesus who alone is able to help them follow His ways.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
