In Psalms chapter thirty eight David said, “My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off. They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that opens not his mouth”, and in chapter thirty eight and verse fourteen of Psalms David said, “I was as a man that hears not” where we read,
Thus I was as a man that hears not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.
The verse begins, “Thus I was as a man that hears not, ...” David began with the words, “Thus I was” or “therefore, wherefore and on this account I, David, existed” “as a man that hears not” which means “in likeness to a person whether male or female who does not listen, obey, give attention to or perceive”. David said because he felt like a “deaf and dumb” person, he was as one who does not listen, obey or perceive.
The verse continues, “... and in whose mouth are no reproofs.” David added the words, “and in whose mouth” or “and within those people's orifices in their faces used for eating and speaking” “are no reproofs” which means “exist not any corrections, chastisements, arguments or chiding”. David shared how people who will not listen and are mute do not exist with correction or chastisements within their mouths.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David likened himself to people who will not hear, speak or obey godly ways, and therefore there is no correction within their “mouths”. In other words, they will not receive reproof from anyone including Jehovah God Himself. Isaiah the prophet said, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (See Isaiah 53:6), and there is a natural bent to doing things “my way” and not following the ways of God. This proud spirit will keep multitudes of people from receiving Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Proverbs chapter fourteen and verse twelve says, “There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”, and Jesus said, “Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat” (See Matthew 7:13), and those who will not listen to and obey Jesus will remain without hearing and thus refuse God's offer of salvation and eternal life with Him. Let us humble ourselves, listen to Jehovah God, yield to Jesus and allow Him to speak to our hearts in any way He desires.
Next time David says, “For in you, O LORD, do I hope”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
