In Psalms chapter thirty eight David said, “My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off. They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long”, and in chapter thirty eight and verse thirteen of Psalms David said, “but I, as a deaf man, heard not” where we read,
But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that opens not his mouth.
The verse begins, “But I, as a deaf man, heard not;” David began with the words, “But I” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover I, David”, “was as a deaf man” which means “existed as a non-hearing male human being”, “heard not” or “was unable to listen, perceive, give attention to and understand”. David said he was like a person who could not “listen nor perceive”.
The verse goes on to say, “and I was as a dumb man that opens not his mouth.” David continued with the words, “and I was as a dumb man” or “and I, David, existed like a person who was mute, silent and unable to speak” “that opens not his mouth” which means “who does not free, loose or unstop his, the mute person's, orifice in the face used for eating and speaking”. David shared how he was also like a mute person who was unable to use his “mouth” for speaking.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn more about the way David felt while he suffered affliction and had so many people being distant from and against him. David not only contended with the ailments he felt in his body and soul, but also from being ostracized by those who were closest to him. Jesus knew what this was like when He remained silent as He made His way to the cross to die for the sins of the world. (See Mark 14:50 and 1 Peter 2:23) Jesus endured this for us because He desires to forgive the sins of every person who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. When we surrender our lives to Jesus, though we make be unable to hear and speak because of oppressors, He will not only identify with us, but also protect and defend us against their onslaughts.
Next time David says, “I was as a man that hears not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
