In Psalms chapter thirty eight David said, “My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off. They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that opens not his mouth. Thus I was as a man that hears not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. For in you, O LORD, do I hope: you will hear, O Lord my God”, and in chapter thirty eight and verse sixteen of Psalms David said, “Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me” where we read,
For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me:
when my foot slips, they magnify themselves against me.
The verse begins, “For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me:” David began with the words, “For I said” or “because, since and on account that I, David, uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Hear me” which means “answer, respond and pay attention to me, David”, “lest otherwise” or “unless, so and that” “they should rejoice over me” which means “they, the people who opposed David, will arrogantly exult, be gladden and religiously make merry about and concerning me, David”. David told how he appealed to Jehovah God to listen to and respond to him or the people who opposed him would make merry concerning him.
The verse continues, “when my foot slips, they magnify themselves against me.” David added the words, “when my foot slips” or “at the time and moment my, David's, step, journey and moves shakes, totters and dislodges”, “they magnify themselves” which means “they, the people who were opposed to David, grow, become great or important, promote and make powerful their own selves” “against me” or “according to, on behalf of and concerning me, David”. David shared at the time his “journey or stand” shakes and dislodges, his opposition make themselves important and powerful against him.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see David's appeal to Jehovah God to respond to him or his enemies would make merry over him. He said at the time his journey becomes upset, his opposition would make themselves powerful and mighty against him. In other words, David desired the defense and protection of Jehovah God against his foes. David knew having a personal relationship with Jehovah God was to his advantage, and no one who came against him would succeed when Jehovah intervened. God wants a personal intimate relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when we submit ourselves to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide His Holy Spirit who will “guide” us “into all truth”. (See John 16:11) Even when our journey has “bumps in the road”, when we align with Jehovah God and His way through His Son Jesus, He will be with us to defend and protect us against anyone who “rejoices” in our difficulties.
Next time David says, “my sorrow is continually before me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
