In Psalms chapter thirty eight David said, “For I will declare my iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin. But my enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied”, and in chapter thirty eight and verse twenty of Psalms David said, “they also that render evil for good are my adversaries” where we read,
They also that render evil for good are my adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is.
The verse begins, “They also that render evil for good are my adversaries;” David began with the words, “They also that render evil for good” or “the people whether male or female even so and indeed who complete, finish and make compensation of bad, disagreeableness, unpleasantness, misery and malignancy in place of that which is pleasant, agreeable, excellent, rich, valuable and appropriate” “are my adversaries” which means “exist as my, David's, attackers, accusers and resisters”. David said there were people who compensated or returned to him with that which is bad, malignant and miserable for that which was pleasant, rich and valuable existed as his hating foes.
The verse continues, “because I follow the thing that good is.” David added the words, “because I follow” or “since and on account that I, David, pursue, run after, chase and attend closely to” “the thing that good is” which means “to attitudes, actions and deeds that are pleasant, agreeable, excellent, rich, valuable and appropriate”. David said the reason his “adversaries” returned “evil” to him for “good” was on account that he pursued the ideas, attitudes, actions and deeds that are pleasant, valuable and appropriate.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David's adversaries treated him. When David did “good” things, they returned “evil” things. They were doing this because David pursued that which was “good”. Luke the beloved physician said, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him” (See Acts 10:38), and yet, people crucified Him. This may seem unfair, but we must remember we have an Almighty Creator God who desires to be in a personal relationship with us, and He provided His Son Jesus, as righteous and good that He was, to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we submit our lives to Him not only can He relate to receiving evil for good, but also He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and guide us through times when people compensate us with “evil” for our “good”.
Next time David says, “forsake me not, O LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
