A Great Multitude of Fishes - Luke 5:6

The beloved physician Luke shared how, “it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God”, Jesus “stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at your word I will let down the net”, and in chapter five and verse six of his book Luke shares, “when they had done this, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes” where we read:

And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

The verse reads,And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: Luke began with the words, “And when” or “and at the time and moment”, “they had this done” which means “Simon and his other fishermen did as Jesus said”, “they inclosed a great multitude of fishes” or “Simon and his fellow fishermen inclosed, caught and drew in a large and massive amount of fish”. Luke shared how Simon and his fellow fishermen let their nets down into the water as Jesus said and drew in a “large amount” of fish.

The verse continues, and their net brake. Luke added the word, “and their net” which means “and Simon and his fellow fishermen's fishing nets” “brake” or “broke, tore and burst asunder”. Luke shared how there were so many fish caught that they began to “tear and break” the nets of Simon and his fellow fishermen.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew much more about fishing than these “professionals”. Though Simon and his companions “fished” for a living and knew fishing was usually better performed in the nighttime, Jesus knew how to catch fish any time He desired. Jesus was the Creator of the world, and all things are before Him and known by Him. “Simon” needed to see a vivid and memorable example of how Jesus was greater than any knowledge he ever had, and because He was, submission to Him was the best decision Simon and his fellow fishermen could take. Let all who read these words yield themselves to the power and knowledge of Jesus who knows more about any vocation than anyone who occupies those positions.

Next time Luke shares, “beckoned unto their partners”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
