Melchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmodam and Er - Luke 3:28

Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, Nagge, Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph, Juda, Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, Salathiel and Neri, and in chapter three and verse twenty-eight of his book Luke added more names to the lineage of Jesus where we read:

Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam,

which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,

The verse reads, “Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, ... Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Melchi” which means “my king, my counsel”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Addi” which means “ornament” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Cosam” which means “divining”. Luke shared three more names in Jesus' earthly lineage - “my king or my counsel, ornament and divining”.

The verse goes on to say, “... which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,” Luke continued with the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Elmodam” or “measure”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Er” or “watchful”. Luke shared two more names of Jesus' earthly ancestors - “measure and watchful”

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn more of God's desire to communicate the “gospel” through the names of Jesus' ancestors. “My king or my counsel, ornament, divining, measure and watchful” were the meanings of these men who were within Jesus' lineage. God is “King”, and when a person has a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, they become as an “ornament” within their lives where “divining measure” and “watchfulness” are constantly with them. God loves people, and His plan of redemption has been in place since the “fall” of man in the Garden of Eden. Salvation is obtained by believing and trusting in Jesus as a personal “Savior and Lord”, and those who are wise will yield their lives to the One whose ancestors' names speak to His salvation.

Next time Luke continues with the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
