Hold Your Peace - Luke 4:35

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus taught in the synagogue in Nazareth, “And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, and came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days, and they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with you, you Jesus of Nazareth? are you come to destroy us? I know you who you are; the Holy One of God”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “rebuked him, saying, hold your peace” where we read:

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold your peace, and come out of him.

And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

The verse reads,And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold your peace, and come out of him. Luke began with the words, “and Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “rebuked him” which means “chided, reproved, censured severely, admonished and charged the unclean devil”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Hold your peace” which means “be muzzled or close your mouth and be silent and speechless”, “and come out of him” or “and withdraw, emit and emanate from the man whom the devil possessed”. Luke shared how Jesus “strongly admonished” the “unclean devil” and told Him to “be quiet” and withdraw from the man.

The verse goes on to say,And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. Luke continued with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “the devil” or “the evil spirit, messenger and minister of the devil” “had thrown him in the midst” which means “had cast the man down to the ground in the middle of the people”, “he came out of him” or “the unclean devil withdrew, emitted and emanated from the man”, “and hurt him not” which means “and did not harm or injure the man”. Luke shared how the “unclean devil” threw the man into the middle of the crowd of people and withdrew from him without injury.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover the power and authority Jesus has over “unclean devils”. These “evil spirits” were afraid of Jesus because He could have banished them to destruction before their time. One of the greatest verses concerning the devil himself in found in Revelation chapter twenty and verse ten that reads, And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever”, and because Jesus will one day make this final judgment upon Satan and his “ministers”, every “unclean spirit” within the world is attempting to keep people from a relationship with God through His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will study Jesus' power over Satan and all his imps, and find how wonderful it is to have a relationship with the One who has authority over them all.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “they were all amazed … saying, What a word is this”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
