Simeon, Juda, Joseph, Jonan and Eliakim - Luke 3:30

Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, Nagge, Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph, Juda, Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, Salathiel, Neri, Melchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmodam, Er, Jose, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat and Levi, and in chapter three and verse thirty of his book Luke added more names to the lineage of Jesus where we read:

Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph,

which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim,

The verse reads, “Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, ... Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Simeon” which means “hearkening”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Juda” which means “he shall be praised” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Joseph” which means “let him add”. Luke shared three more names who were ancestors of Jesus - “hearkening, he shall be praised and let him add”.

The verse goes on to say, “... which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim, ...” Luke continued with the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Jonan” or “Jehovah is a gracious giver”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Eliakim” or “raising up by God”. Luke added two more names to the ancestral list of Jesus - “Jehovah is a gracious giver and raising up by God”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we notice again the intention of God to show mankind His desire to “save” them from their sins so they may live with Him forever. “Hearkening, he shall be praised, let him add, Jehovah is a gracious giver and raising up by God” all tell the story of God's redemption plan through His Son Jesus. Those who “hearken” or listen to God will be “praised” by Him, and because His message is worth repeating, so are these names. God desires to “add” to people's lives because “Jehovah is a gracious giver” and He wants to “raise” them up to be with Him even as He did His own Son Jesus. Let all who read these words carefully inspect the names within Jesus' lineage and learn of God's desire for them to believe and trust in His Son Jesus.

Next time Luke continues with the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
