Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone - Luke 4:4

Luke the physician shared how Jesus, “ full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread”, and in chapter four and verse four of his book Luke shared how Jesus answered, “Man shall not live by bread alone” where we read:

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written,

That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

The verse reads, “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, ... Luke began with the words, “and Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “answered him” which means “responded and began to speak to the devil”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “It is written” which means “it is delineated or formed in letters upon a tablet, parchment, paper or other material in the sacred books of the Old Testament”. Luke shared how Jesus began to respond to the “devil” by referring to the Holy Scripture.

The verse continues, “... That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” Luke added the words, “that man shall not live” which means “that human beings whether male or female do not breathe, exist among the living, are not active, blessed or endless” “by bread alone” or “through and by way of flour mixed with water and baked only or merely”, “but by every word” which means “” “of God” or “belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and God incarnate”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to Deuteronomy chapter eight and verse three where God told Moses to declare “man does not live by bread only”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus resisted the temptation of the “devil” with the word of God. Jesus knew this verse in Deuteronomy, and rather than reason with “Satan” concerning His temptation, Jesus spoke the word of God to him. It is worth noting that Jesus knew the word of God, and when “Satan” attacks and tempts people, they resist him best when they employ God's word. God is for people, and He desires to “save” them from the penalty for sin by believing and trusting in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words know and understand how Jesus resisted the “devil” and may we learn from Him.

Next time Luke shares how the devil took Jesus, “into a high mountain”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
