Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph and Juda - Luke 3:26

Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli and Nagge, and in chapter three and verse twenty-six of his book Luke shared more names in the lineage of Jesus where we read:

Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei,

which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda,

The verse reads, “Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, ... Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Maath” which means “small”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Mattathias” which means “gift of Jehovah” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Semei” which means “hearkeners; my report”. Luke shared three more names in Jesus' lineage - “small, gift of Jehovah and hearkeners”.

The verse goes on to say, “... which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda,” Luke continued with the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Joseph” or “let him add”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Juda” or “he shall be praised”. Luke shared two more names of Jesus' earthly ancestors - “let him add and he shall be praised”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see more to the story within the names of Jesus' earthly ancestors. “Small, gift of Jehovah, hearkeners, let him and he shall be praised” continue to convey the idea of “Jehovah” God desiring to provide “salvation” to mankind from the penalty for their sins. Jesus is the Christ of God, and no one else has such a message within their lineage. God loves people, and He repeated the idea of His Son Jesus being a “gift of Jehovah” because He woos all who will yield their lives to Him to have a personal relationship with God.

Next time Luke continues to share the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
