Tell No Man - Luke 5:14

The beloved physician Luke shared how, “it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be you clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him”, and in chapter five and verse fourteen of his book Luke shares how Jesus charge the leper who was healed, “to tell no man” where we read:

And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and show yourself to the priest,

and offer for your cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

The verse reads,And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and show yourself to the priest, ... Luke began with the words, “And he charged him” or “and Jesus ordered, enjoined and commanded the man who was cleansed from leprosy” “to tell no man” which means “to speak or say a word to not one person”: “but go” or “however, nonetheless, moreover and the man was to depart and leave Jesus”, “and show yourself to the priest” which means “and expose and show evidence of the man's own healing to the one who offers sacrifices and in general in busied with sacred rites”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed the man healed of leprosy not to “tell” anyone what happened to him, but he was rather to “go” to the “priest” and show him what happened to him.

The verse goes on to say,and offer for your cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. Luke continued with the words, “and offer for your cleansing” which means “and bring or bear forth on behalf, concerning and on account of the man's purification, ablution, expiation and purging”, “according as Moses commanded” or “down from, towards and even as Moses whose name means drawing out and was the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion assigned, appointed, defined and prescribed”, “for a testimony unto them” which means “as evidence and witness toward the priests”. Luke shared how Jesus continued to instruct the man who was cleansed of leprosy by telling him to “follow the law of Moses” and bring a “sacrifice” to the priest as a “witness and evidence” that he was healed.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus did not want this man who was cleansed of leprosy broadcasting or publishing what happened to him. The man was rather to go to the “religious leader who offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people”, and “offer” a sacrifice to God for his cleansing. Leviticus chapter thirteen shares the “law of Moses” concerning a person who has leprosy, and at this point in time, no one ever was “cured” of it. Jesus “cleansed” this man from his leprous condition, and in accordance with God's prescribed way, the man was to comply with Jesus direction. Those who examine the correlation between “leprosy” and “sin” shall find that every person is infected with this “spiritual disease”. “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), and the only cure, the only cleansing and the only healing from this spiritual disease is to believe and trust in Jesus Christ as a personal “Savior and Lord”. Only Jesus paid the price of death on the cross for the sins of mankind, and those who are wise will bow before Him, the “Priest of Priests”, and bring the sacrifice of a willing heart to Him to be cleansed from “sin” and made whole.

Next time Luke shares, “but so much the more went there a fame abroad of him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
