Depart from Me for I am Sinful - Luke 5:8

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus spoke from Simon's boat to a crowd of people who were gathered on the shore of lake Gennesaret, and afterward, “he said unto Simon, launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at your word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink”, and in chapter five and verse eight of his book Luke shares how Simon Peter said, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man” where we read:

When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying,

Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

The verse reads,When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, ... Luke began with the words, “When Simon Peter saw it” or “at the time and moment Simon Peter whose name means a little rock or stone observed, noticed, discovered and discerned the massive haul of fish to the point of sinking their boats”, “he fell down at Jesus' knees” which means “Simon Peter prostrated himself below the physical knees of Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how “Simon Peter” observed the miracle performed by Jesus, immediately “fell” at “Jesus' knees” and proclaimed the following words.

The verse goes on to say,Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. Luke continued with the word, “Depart from me” which means “go forth, emanate and escape from Simon Peter himself”: “for I am a sinful man” or “because, since and on account that I, Simon Peter, exist as a male human being who is not free from sin, pre-eminently sinful, especially wicked and heathen”, “O Lord” which means “O' One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. Luke shared how “Simon Peter” was so overcome with emotion that he told Jesus to “escape” from him because he was an “exceedingly wicked and sinful” man.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how this miracle performed by Jesus convicted “Simon Peter” of his sinful state. Simon never saw anything like this before, and although he was a fisherman for all his life, he knew this haul of fish was something beyond a simple fishing expedition. Jesus is able to perform miracles that bring a person to “self knowledge”, and the first step to recognizing their need for a “Savior” is to realize their “sinful” state. Jesus came to the world to save people from their “sins”, and when they encounter the true and living God, Jesus, not only will they see themselves for who they really are, but they will “bow their knees” before Him and plead for His mercy and grace.

Next time Luke shares how Peter and the others were, “astonished … at the draught of the fishes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
